Rheinhessen
Since 1663 the Wittmanns and its ancestors have been wine farmers in the town of Westhofen, in the
southern part of the Rheinhessen appellation. Philipp Wittman is the 11th generation to run the winery.
Riesling is the dominant grape of choice but also the Pinot varietals have a long tradition in Westhofen.
For more than thirty years our vineyards have been origanically cultivated. The vines root deep in the
living system of the soil which strengthens the expression of vineyard character, or terroir, in our wines.
Intensive hand craftsmanship in the tending of the vineyards serves the goal of achieving the highest
possible grape quality. Only the very best wines bear the names of the top sites of Westhofen. The soils in
these sites are mainly marl interspersed with limestone.
The carefully pressed must fermented by the natural yeasts in wooden casks in our large vaulted cellars.
The slow fermentation and maturation in the constantly cool cellar conserves the natural aromas. Thus
the Wittmann wines come to have their own expression which is at once unmistakable and new every year.

They say that you never get a second chance to make a first impression. Our ESTATE wines serve as that calling card, introducing the elegance and sense of place for which our Rheinhessen estate is known. The grapes are all grown in our own vineyards, cultivated bio-dynamically and tended by hand. They are exceptionally food friendly wines both in their youth and as they mature.

Grapes selected from the best vineyards on the "Westhofener Berg". This wine showcases the typical limestone minerality of our Premier Cru vineyards. Clear yellow fruit on the nose with a slight smoky note. Juicy and with plenty of grip on the palate. With a long-lasting, salty finish, this Westhofener Riesling unmistakably reveals its origins.

Our Riesling vines grow in the heart of AULERDE, where heavy clayey marl soil is laced with loess loam and limestone and the subsoil is leavened with yellow and sandy clay loam with gravel. The vines in this site are nearly seventy years old and planted in high density.

The KIRCHSPIEL opens up toward the Rhine like an ancient amphitheater, ready to bask in the first morning rays of sunshine. The vineyards face from east to southeast, protected against the west winds and creating the outstanding microclimate for which the KIRCHSPIEL is known. Our vines are primarily planted in the upper portion of the site, at inclines of up to 30%.
