Hilary and Alexander Zahel

After finishing his undergraduate degree in Oenology in 2005 and spending two vintages gathering work experience in New Zealand and Australia, Alexander returned to his native Vienna to partner with his uncle in growing his small family estate. During the next twenty years, Alex would grow become a general manager and shareholder, growing the winery into a successful brand with export in 25 countries and leading its transition to organic agriculture in 2014 and a biodynamic certification in 2018. His experience working toward a more conscious, environmentally-responsible inspired him pursue ROA certification, which the winery achieved in early 2024, becoming the first regeneratively certified winery in Europe. After parting ways with his uncle and the family estate in July 2024, Together with his wife Hilary, Alex is looking forward to a bright future in the wine world, combining his passions for low intervention winemaking with strong beliefs in the regenerative, organic, and biodynamic agriculture movements.

2024 Demeter Retzer Land Grüner Veltliner Alte Reben

This biodynamic Grüner Veltliner was hand harvested end of August with a crisp acidity and only 12.5% potential ABV. It comes from sandstone and granite soils with a limestone top soil. This terroir lends the wine a unique minimality that compliments the long lees aging and 45 year old vines.

Tasting notes: fresh, apple and citrus fruit with peppery aromas reminiscent of Grüner Veltliner, bone dry taste with crisp acidity and elegant fruity flavors with spicy notes. fruity and drinkable finish;

Winemaking: whole bunch pressing, spontaneous fermentation in 100% 1200l Stockinger barrels and 6 months on the fine lees, minimal sulfuring and no filtration or fining before bottling;

2024 ROC/organic Retzer Land Gemischter Satz Alte Reben

This regenerative organic certified Gemischter Satz was hand harvested on September 7th with 7,2g/l acidity. It comes from sandstone and granite soils with a limestone top soil. The wines are 65 years old and therefore had no problem with the warm summer of 2024. This terroir lends the wine a unique minimality that compliments the field blend based primarily on Grüner Veltliner, Pinot blanc and Chardonnay.

Tasting notes: intense exotic and citrus fruit with apricot aromas dry taste with well integrated acidity and fruity taste with crisp, fruity notes. complex finish due to its time on the skins (24 hours) before pressing.

Winemaking: 24 hours skin contact spontaneous fermentation in 50% 1200l Stockinger barrels/ 50% stainless steel tank and 6 months on the fine lees, minimal sulfuring and no filtration or fining before bottling;

2024 ROC/organic Kapfenstein Sauvignon Blanc Alte Reben

This regenerative organic Sauvignon Blanc was hand harvested on September 4th with an elegant crisp acidity and only 12.5% potential ABV. It comes from sandstone top soils with volcanic bedrock. This terroir lends the wine a unique freshness that compliments the 65 year old vines.

Tasting notes: intense cassis and exotic fruit aromas reminiscent of Sauvignon Blanc, bone dry taste with well balanced acidity and complex fruity taste with spicy notes. well structured with a long finish;

Winemaking: 12 hours skin contact in press, spontaneous fermentation in 100% 600l Stockinger barrels and 6 months on the fine lees, minimal sulfuring and no filtration or fining before bottling;

2024 ROC/organic Langenlois Riesling Alte Reben

This regenerative organic Riesling was hand harvested on September 9th with an elegant crisp acidity and only 12.5% potential ABV. It comes from loess top soil with a granite bedrock. This terroir lends the wine a unique freshness that compliments the 55 year old vines.

Tasting notes: intense citrus and apricot fruit aromas reminiscent this high altitude cool Kamptal climate, dry taste with zesty acidity and flinty taste, elegant, fresh but also complex finish;

Winemaking: 18 hours skin contact in press, spontaneous fermentation in 100% 600l Stockinger barrels and 6 months on the fine lees, minimal sulfuring and no filtration or fining before bottling;

2024 ROC/Organic Pet Nat Gemischter Satz

This regenerative organic certified Gemischter Satz was hand harvested on August 25th with 8,2g/l acidity and a potential alcohol of only 10,5% ABV. It comes from sandstone and granite soils with a limestone top soil. The wines are 45 years old and therefore had no problem with the warm summer of 2024. This terroir lends the wine a unique minimality that compliments the field blend based primarily on Scheurebe, Welschriesling and Grüner Veltliner.

Tasting notes: intense fresh citrus fruit with green apple and exotic aromas, dry taste with fine bubbles and well balanced fresh acidity and fruity taste. very tasty finish with lots of fruit and flinty aromas.

Winemaking: 24 hours skin contact spontaneous fermentation in 100% 1200l Stockinger barrels before bottling with only 10g/l residual sugar. Therefore this Pet nat has only 2,8 Bar pressure and was not disgorged;

2023 Bio Blaufränkisch Alte Reben

This organic Blaufränkisch comes from sandstone and granite soils with a limestone top soil. This terroir lends the wine a unique complex minimality that compliments the long lees aging and 53 year old vines.

Tasting notes: elegant red berry and cherry fruit with lots of spicy notes, smooth, velvety tannins with well integrated fine acidity and complex almost concentrated fruit flavors coming from the old vines. flinty taste with a long but fresh, mineral finish;

Winemaking: two weeks spontaneous fermentation in 100% Stockinger fermenters and 18 months storage in 100% 1200l Stockinger barrels on the fine lees, minimal sulfuring and no filtration or fining before bottling;
