The Clemens Busch winery is a family-owned winery in Pünderich, at the midpoint of the Mosel River. Riesling is essential here, as the slate slopes provide perfect conditions. Their best single-site vineyards are in the VDP GROSSE LAGE “Pündericher Marienburg,” a steep slope just across the river from Pünderich village. As the soil here varies between blue, grey, and red slate, many wines of different styles and unique characters are produced. Organic winemaking has always been one of Clemens Busch’s principles for achieving the highest quality and sustainability. The family has worked organically since 1984. Their fermentations are influenced as little as possible to express the vineyard’s character in the wine. Often, these fermentations, using only the vineyards’ native yeast, last 8 months or longer.
Dry wines, including their Grosses Gewächs (Grand Cru), off-dry wines from their best vineyards, and, of course, the noble sweet botrytis wines right up to their Trockenbeerenauslese are part of the Clemens Busch wine selection.

“Vom grauen Schiefer“ translates to “on the grey slate”. As the name suggests, the grapes for this wine grow on the steep slopes of our vineyard sites in Pünderich, where the grey slate is the predominant soil structure. The soil gives the Riesling its distinctive minerality and flavors reminiscent of white and yellow peaches. The grapes get handpicked by mid to end of October at about 85-90° Oechsle. They get gently pressed and will ferment spontaneously in old “Fuder” barrels. In the cool cellar, fermentation often lasts until summer. The wines are bottled after around 10 to 11 months in the barrel. All our wines get treated with the lowest intervention possible. The long maceration time on the lees gives our wines a great structure and excellent aging potential.

Vom blauen Schiefer“ translates to „on the blue slate”. The Riesling grapes for this wine grow in our single vineyard site called “Fahrlay”. It is the second wine from this site. Fahrlay is located next to the ferry landing place, within the premium site of Marienburg. It is the only vineyard where blue slate is the dominant soil. This type of slate is much harder than the grey or red slate. The vines have a tough time at first, until their roots have managed to find a way through the cracks of the slate. They dig deep to reach for the water reserves and can supply themselves through this with all the nutrients they need. The grapes get handpicked around mid of October. They get pressed very gently and will then ferment spontaneously in old “Fuder” barrels. In the cool cellar, fermentation often lasts until summer. After around 10 to 11 months in the barrel the wines get bottled.

The site “Nonnengarten” is located to the west of the Marienburg, and it faces southeast. The soil consists mainly of red slate with some parts of heavy loam; it is marbled and somewhat heavier than the other parts of the Marienburg site. The Riesling grapes that grow on this soil show a unique spicy and earthy character and a distinguish slate minerality. The grapes get handpicked around mid of October. They get gently pressed and will ferment spontaneously in old “Fuder” barrels. In the cool cellar, fermentation often lasts until summer. The wines are bottled after around 10 to 11 months in the barrel. All our wines get treated with the lowest intervention possible.

The single plot “Falkenlay” lies within our premium site “Pündericher Marienburg” in between “Rothenpfad” and “Fahrlay”. The soil is a bit heavier and is dominated by grey slate. The old winemakers in the village have always declared “Falkenlay” as the best site in the Marienburg. The vines are protected from sometimes harsh winds and the grapes always reach a special kind of ripeness, due to its distinctive site. The wines are fruit forward, intense, and show a unique type of minerality.
