At Zahel, winemaking is working closely with nature, using methods that leave our vineyards as untouched as possible. After a decades-long commitment to rejecting pesticides and embracing a natural approach, we received our organic certification in 2017 and since 2018, cultivate our vineyards biodynamically. We feel strongly that these practices not only produce better wine but will allow our vineyards to thrive for generations to come.
At home in Vienna, the world’s only city also classified as its own wine growing region, our 35 hectares of vineyards are distributed throughout all of the area’s main growing zones. The varied terroir of each region ranges from flysch sandstone to loess to Dolomite chalk and in concert with numerous micro-climates, provides a basis for world-class wines. In this unique sense, Vienna’s diverse terrain reflects the multi-faceted nature of city itself.
Alongside our nature-driven approach to cultivating our vineyards, we appreciate that good bottle results not only from top-quality grapes, but months of careful craftsmanship. Crushed where necessary, pressed, fermented and aged, we use a light but experienced hand, respect for tradition, and great passion to bring character and precision to each Zahel wine.

Kaasgraben is a single vineyard situated in a small
valley adjacent to the renowned Nussberg hill. The
geological formation of the region’s elevations and
valleys — actually the last foothills of the Alps — date
back to the same age as the French regions of
Burgundy and Champagne.

Goldberg is one of the finest and highest elevated
single vineyards in Oberlaa, located in the city’s
southeastern region. Here, a warmer climate and soil
structure comprised of sandy loam and ice-age
gravel bring a balanced ripeness and fine minerality
to this 13-varietal field blend.

To the north of Vienna’s center, you’ll find the
Nussberg — a hill known for some of the city’s finest and
oldest vineyards, many featuring sweeping views of the
Danube River and Viennese skyline. Nussberg’s soil
structure is stoniest of the area’s wine growing regions,
characterized by a weathered shell-limestone floor and
sandy clay/loam terraces. This terroir lends the wine a
minerality that compliments the field blend, based primarily
on Burgundy varietals.

After developing a passion for Pinot Noir in viticulture
school, Alex Zahel took the opportunity to re-plant a
family vineyard with the small-berry, Burgundian clone
115,114 in his early years as a winemaker. 18 years later,
single vineyard Sätzen has proven itself as a prime location
for the varietal with its mineral-rich Dolomite limestone
soil structure and stable, cool microclimate.
