Wine-growing region:
Toscana

The Tenuta di Valgiano is situated 250 metres above sea level on a hillside 10 km north-east of the charming city of Lucca in northern Tuscany, and only a short distance from the Tyrrhenian coast. The climate is Mediterranean and the considerable amounts of light foster excellent polyphenolic ripening. The most sensitive agricultural methods, which include biodynamic, are used to cultivate the vines with the aim of producing top-quality grapes that best express the terroir. Traditional methods are used in the cellar and technological interference is kept to a minimum. The objective is to produce, in the simplest possible way, wines that are an expression of the place in which they are cultivated: Valgiano!
The Tenuta di Valgiano’s 16 hectares of vineyards stand on a terrace of pebbles and clayey alberese rocks.
By preference, the Sangiovese is grown along the edge of the alberese soil, that allows it to maintain its aromatic properties and at the same time achieve good structure. The clayey soil is where the Merlot is cultivated and it is able to maintain its fineness and elegance, despite the heaviness of the soil. On the sandstone pebbles, it is only the Syrah that can achieve structure as well as perfume.
The vines are between 6 and 40 years old and there are 5700 plants per hectare. Organic and biodynamic farming have been adopted: careful management of the soil through seeding leguminous, gramineae and aromatic plants, sensitive use of tillage, clay, copper and sulphur treatments only, biological action against parasites, and sensitive management of the leaf canopy. Analyses are carried out on the deep layers of soil in order to gain a better understanding of the natural vine-climate-soil balance and therefore ensure that this balance is maintained.

2022 Palistorti di Valgiano

Vino Rosso DOC Colline Lucchesi
Sangiovese 70%, Cigliegiolo, Canaiolo, Colorino 10%, Syrah e Merlot 20%.
Red wine
Demeter certified

Palistorti means “crooked posts” because of the big rocks of limestone lying on the surface, thus impeding laying the vineyard in a straight line.
Vineyards and climate - Ten hectares vineyard, average 28 years old, on the Apennine slopes facing predominantly south, at an altitude of 200 metres above sea level, formed during a recent glaciation of sandstone or calcareous marl exposed by the melted ice.
Harvest / cellar: Hand picked in small boxes, grapes are sorted on a first selection belt, destemmed, then re sorted on a second selection belt to be delivered into the wooden vats, for fermentation. Manually plunged by foot. In these conditions, 10/15 days of maceration are sufficient for a gentle, full extraction of the aromas and quality tannins.
Maturation: After racking, the wine is allowed to settle briefly. Then, through gravity, it enters lightly toasted French barriques (no new oak), where it completes malolactic fermentation. Racking follows natural rhythms with air compressed rather than pumps. After 12 months wine is assembled in cement vats for another 6 months before bottling.
Biodynamic (Demeter), since 2002; Certified Organic (Icea).

2023 Palistorti di Valgiano

Vino Bianco IGT Toscana
Vermentino 30% Trebbiano 30%, Malvasia 30%, Grechetto.
White wine
Demeter certified

Once upon a time, white grapes were co planted with red grapes mixed in the vineyard; they were then processed all together to make low alcohol red wine. Nowadays, they are vinified as a white wine, the result being , an elegant, fresh, entertaining Mediterranean wine.
Vineyard and climate – Two hectares vineyard, average 28 years old, lying on soils of limestone formed during recent glaciation, bearing character both from the coast and the nearby Apennines mountain range.
Harvest / cellar: Grapes are hand picked in small boxes. They are selected, then pressed and fermented in stainless steel; only Vermentino, is destemmed manually, undergoes short skin contact of one day and one night, enough to extract the best juice from the tough flesh, then it is fermented in barrique, finally transferred in steel tanks together with the rest of the white grapes.
Maturation: Six months in stainless steel vats. Light bentonite fining just before bottling, then ready to be released.
Biodynamic (Demeter), since 2002; Certified Organic (Icea).

2018 Tenuta di Valgiano

Vino Rosso DOC Colline Lucchesi
Sangiovese 70 % Syrah 20%, Merlot 10%.
Red wine
Demeter certified

The Tenuta di Valgiano estate is perched on the hills of the “Lucchesia”, squeezed between the Apennine mountain range and the Tyrrhenian coast. The surface of the vineyard is 16 hectares, and, together with the olive grove, the bee hives, the orchard, vegetables, sheep, goats, chicken and rabbits, sum up to a total surface of 55HA. All farmed biodynamically. After thirty years, vines and soils have reached the ideal balance, producing healthy and juicy grapes, which are processed manually. Ten hectares vineyard, average forty years old, lying on very ancient soils, dating back to preglacial era, where the Ligurian plaque meets the Tuscan rock, hence forming a stratification of limestone- in depth, clay, sandstone and alluvia.

After 12 months it is assembled in cement vats for another 6 months before bottling. Certified Biodynamic (Demeter), since 2002; Certified Organic (Icea).

2022 Mazzapink

Vino Rosso IGP Toscana
Sangiovese 80%, Cabernet 20%
Red wine

The new Valgiano wine was born from the management of the vineyards of our neighbors scattered on the hills between San Pietro a Marcigliano and Sant’Andrea in Caprile. The orographic conditions are the same as in Valgiano: half-hill vineyards (250 metres), resting on the imposing slope of the Pizzorne boulder (900 metres) and a few miles from the Tyrrhenian coast. The meso climate, a fundamental aspect of our terroir, is the same. The soils are quite similar. The vines have an average age of fifteen years. The collaboration with our neighbours was born eight years ago. Organic and biodynamic practices are entirely managed by our workforce. Tenuta di Valgiano buys the grapes at harvest time, then vinifies them in its cellar, following the practices that have always been implemented: de-stemming and pressing by foot in small vats are already a custom for this new "nectar". A little Sulphur is added at bottling time, whilst maturation takes place in large cement vats, for six months. Managing these vineyards is a stimulating project, the result of an ideal combination that unites a vineyard with excellent exposure to a soil slightly different from ours: it is Alberese limestone marl.
