Through their estates Battenfeld Spanier and Kühling-Gillot, Carolin and H.O. Spanier cultivate slate soil terroirs on the Rheinhessian Roter Hang and Rhine Terrace, as well as the pure limestone soils of the Zellertal and Wonnegau. Riesling and Spätburgunder are cultivated across twelve distinctive crus. The winemakers are members of the VDP.Die Prädikatsweingüter, La Renaissance des Appellations, and the Académie du Vin.

2023 Battenfeld Spanier Mölsheim Riesling VDP. Aus Ersten Lagen

VDP. Aus Ersten Lagen
Riesling
White wine

Our Mölsheim vineyards are comparatively high and therefore cooler and wind opener than our Hohen-Sülzen sites. The grapes for the Mölsheim Riesling ripen well-ventilated thanks to the cool winds from the Donnersberg massif, in stony, barren soils of pure limestone with only a thin layer of humus. This is how unique wines with a crystalline, cool character and mineral depth are created, wines that are characterised by their origin.

Nierstein – an iconographic name, associated with the Roter Hang and the Rheinhessen Rhine front like no other. The terroir is rooted in the stony, porous clay slate soils of Nierstein as the tasteable origin of the Erste Lage sites. The Nierstein Riesling, with its unmistakable character of origin, shines with extract-rich fruit, an open structure and taut tension with the greatest possible finesse and vibrancy. It combines everything that characterises a great terroir for us: fully ripe grapes from porous soils, grown on the finest parcels of the Niersteiner Horst, with stringent minerality. The grapes are carefully harvested by hand, fermented spontaneously and matured in Doppelstück 2400l barrels on the fine lees.

The climate is influenced by the nearby Donnersberg, which allows cool winds to flow into the region. The vineyards rise up to 280 metres. Cool climate at its finest. We now own 25 hectares of the unique sites, which are spread across the entire Zellertal. The special feature of the Zellertal is that in one of its sites (the Schwarzen Herrgott), the border between Rheinhessen and the Palatinate was drawn completely arbitrarily at the Congress of Vienna in 1816, dividing the region into two wine-growing areas. However, in terms of viticulture and terroir, the region forms a single unit and cannot be distinguished.
For H.O. Spanier, this region is so special that he has dedicated a wine to it that combines the minerality and uniqueness of this limestone terroir – our interpretation of the Zellertal limestone.

2023 2023 Battenfeld Spanier Frauenberg Riesling VDP. Grosse Lage

VDP. Grosse Lage

White wine

H.O. Spanier has brought the famous Frauenberg vineyard back into the consciousness of wine lovers after a long period of obscurity. Exposed on a mountain ridge at an altitude of 240 metres, with pure limestone rock and a southeasterly orientation, the constant winds allow the grapes to stand as if in a wind tunnel. This allows for a late harvest every year, when the grapes are perfectly ripe.
The historic site was first mentioned in a document as early as 1290 under the name ‘an frauwenhalten’ and was originally owned by a nunnery.
The wines from the Frauenberg are fermented spontaneously after strict selection by hand and matured in casks.

2023 2023 Kühling-Gillot Pettenthal Riesling VDP. Grosse Lage

The Pettenthal is our first historical vineyard on the Roter Hang and lies at an altitude of 80 - 170 metres. With a slope of 70-100%, it is the steepest parcel in all of Rheinhessen. At the end of the 80s, in times of greatest depression, Carolin's father bought a few rows of vines. At that time, it was the hectare that counted, not the origin, and the Pettenthal was difficult to work. Today, we cultivate the Pettenthal in the prime section of this globally unique origin, which then, as now, stands unchallenged as a great terroir for Riesling. The soils of this Grosse Lage consist of red clay slate and sandstone on the steep slope and of loam and clay in the flatter part. The cadastral name has existed since 1753.
The grapes are carefully selected by hand, the must ferments spontaneously and is carefully matured in casks.

2022 Kühling-Gillot Kreuz Spätburgunder VDP. Grosse Lage

VDP. Grosse Lage
Spätburgunder
Red wine

Our parcel of the Oppenheimer Kreuz vineyard is located at an altitude of 100-140 metres in the old core of the site. The soil there is characterised by limestone, interspersed with fragments of coarse and shell limestone. The Kreuz confirms the foresight with which Carolin's father Roland opened the chapter on Pinot Noir with all the experience he gained in Burgundy during his studies: Thanks to the calcareous soils, old Kerner vines were grafted with Pinot Noir clones from Burgundy in 1996, at a time when few people thought in terms of origin or Pinot Noir. Pinot Noir is able to express its terroir in a way similar to white wine. The GL CROSS is probably named after a tall sandstone cross that stands at the foot of the vineyard.
The grapes are selectively harvested by hand, gently fermented spontaneously in the cuve and carefully pressed after about 10 days. The wine matures in second-use French barriques.
