Through their estates Battenfeld Spanier and Kühling-Gillot, Carolin and H.O. Spanier cultivate slate soil terroirs on the Rheinhessian Roter Hang and Rhine Terrace, as well as the pure limestone soils of the Zellertal and Wonnegau. Riesling and Spätburgunder are cultivated across twelve distinctive crus. The winemakers are members of the VDP.Die Prädikatsweingüter, La Renaissance des Appellations, and the Académie du Vin.

Our Mölsheim vineyards are located at a relatively high altitude and are therefore cooler than our Hohen-Sülzen sites. Deeply rooted in stony, barren soils of pure limestone with only a thin layer of humus, the grapes for Mölsheim Riesling ripen in well-ventilated conditions thanks to the cool winds of the Donnersberg massif. This results in distinctive, solitary wines with a crystalline, cool character and mineral depth.

H.O. Spanier has brought the famous Frauenberg vineyard back into the consciousness of wine lovers after a long period of obscurity. Exposed on a 240-meter-high ridge of pure limestone rock, which remains pure white at depth, with a southeast orientation, the constant winds leave the grapes standing as if in a wind tunnel. This allows for a late harvest every year at optimal ripeness. The uncompromisingly straightforward wines confirm H.O.'s foresight and, since 2001, have proven the former and now regained reputation and greatness of the Frauenberg vineyard.

Auf dem Kalkofen comes from a vineyard classified as Premier Cru since 2023, with distinctive calcareous soils that give the wine its precise, mineral character. Thanks to stable ecological conditions and careful foliage management, the 2024 vintage produced fully ripe, healthy grapes with a complex spectrum of aromas. Long storage on the fine lees in 1,200-liter barrels gives the wine additional depth, complexity, and high aging potential. On the palate, it displays a dense structure and fine, ripe acidity, presenting itself with the supreme elegance of a Premier Cru Riesling that rivals Grand Cru level wines.

Nierstein – an iconic name that is associated with the Roter Hang and the Rhine front in Rheinhessen like no other. The terroir is rooted in the stony, porous clay slate soils of Nierstein, giving rise to wines with a distinct taste of their premier cru origins. Nierstein Riesling, with its unmistakable character of origin, shines with rich fruit, an open structure, and taut tension with the greatest possible finesse and vibrancy. It combines everything that characterizes a great terroir for us: fully ripe grapes from porous soils from the finest parcels of the Niersteiner Horst with stringent minerality. The grapes are carefully harvested by hand, fermented spontaneously, and mature in double-piece barrels on the fine lees.
